A crate contains a dog. A playpen gives it somewhere to be — which is a different and often more useful thing at a campsite, in a holiday rental, or in any situation where the dog needs to be out of the way but not shut in a box for four hours.
The category divides on one axis: rigid metal versus soft pop-up. Metal contains properly and weighs a lot. Soft pens go up in seconds, fold into a disc, and can be chewed through by a dog that decides to. There is no pen here that is both light and escape-proof, and any listing that implies otherwise is selling you the wrong expectation.

Choosing a portable playpen
Buy for the dog you have, not the dog you describe
Almost every disappointing pen purchase is a containment mismatch. A dog that has never tested a boundary will be fine in a soft pop-up pen. A dog that has escaped anything, ever, needs metal and needs it tall. Height is the specification people under-buy: a 24-inch pen is a step for a medium dog, not a wall.
Panels, weight and the trunk test

Ground matters as much as the pen

Never leave a dog penned and unattended outdoors
Worth stating plainly: a playpen is a management tool for a dog you are supervising, not a way to leave a dog alone at a campsite. Pens can be escaped, tipped, or reached by other animals, and an outdoor pen offers no protection from weather that turns. Use it while you are there.
