Soft vs Hard Dog Crate for Travel
One question decides this, and it isn't price. Here's the side-by-side — and the dog each type is genuinely right for.
We earn a commission when you buy through our Amazon links, at no extra cost to you. It never affects our rankings, and we say so when the cheaper product is the better buy. How this works.
The soft-vs-hard question sounds like a preference and is actually a safety decision. Get it wrong for a chewer and you'll be buying twice. Here is the side-by-side, then the single question that settles it.
Side by side
| Factor | Soft crate | Hard crate |
|---|---|---|
| Weight & pack size | Light; folds flat into a bag | Heavier; collapsible ones fold, rigid ones don't |
| Chew / escape resistance | Low — fabric and mesh | High — the honest choice for a chewer |
| Impact protection | Minimal | Real |
| Airline cargo | No | Only if it meets the airline's live-animal spec |
| Setup speed | Fast (pop-up) | Fast (collapsible) or fixed (rigid) |
| Price | Low to mid | Mid to high |
The question that decides it
Does your dog chew, dig at, or try to escape a crate?
If no— a calm, crate-trained dog that settles and sleeps — buy soft. It's lighter, cheaper, packs flatter, and you give up nothing you'll use. The portable crate roundup leads with a soft crate for exactly this dog.
If yes — any chewing, digging or panic — buy hard. A soft crate is fabric and a motivated dog is through it, which is both a destroyed crate and a loose, stressed dog in a strange place. A hard collapsible gives you most of the packability with real containment.
Two honest edge cases
Flying in cargo?Neither a soft crate nor most hard crates is automatically approved — cargo needs a rigid kennel that meets your airline's live-animal spec. Confirm the model before you buy.
Camping?A soft "tent" crate is genuinely nicer at a campsite for a settled dog — lighter to carry in, quicker to pitch. That's the one place the soft crate's weakness matters least.

We do not run a testing lab, and we do not pretend to. Product dimensions and safety claims come from the manufacturer's own listing; airline limits come from the airline's published policy, with the date we checked it. Where we could not verify something, we say so on the page rather than quietly leaving it out. Read our full method.
